One of the things I hear most often from busy moms is that they wished they had more time to read. I get it! Raising kids and working and trying to get through this pandemic, is hard enough as it is. But I’ve discovered that reading is what makes me feel balanced, and happy. It’s a key part of my self-care routine, and it’s how I learn more empathy and new skills. So today, I wanted to share 4 tips for how to read more, as well as my summer booklist!
Always take your book along
I’ve discovered that it pays off to take the book I’m reading everywhere I go. You never know when you’ll have an extra few minutes to sneak in some reading before appointments, while waiting for your family to run into a store, riding as a passenger in a traffic jam, and more. These are moments when you probably get out your phone, but what if you got out your book instead? It’s a little heavier to haul along, but so worth it!
Create a reading routine
I read at the same times nearly every day: when I wake up with coffee, in the late afternoon while my kids play or watch shows, and right before bed. Even if you only read during one of these windows, making it a habit will help you build it into your routine. You’ll be surprised by how quickly you’ll fly through books by reading a little bit each day. And, it’ll become a habit you look forward to.
If you don’t like it, stop!
There was a time when I was a faithful reader. I’d never put a book down even if I didn’t like it. Not anymore! If I don’t like a book after I read the first 50 pages, I let it go with no regrets. There are so many good books out there, why waste time on something that doesn’t appeal to you? Reading what I love has helped me read considerably more books because I don’t get bogged down trying to finish something I’m not into.
Keep your next book handy
Have you ever finished a really good book, and then felt sad for days afterward? Always keep a few books you plan to read next on your nightstand. It will help ward off the sadness of finishing a really good book, and keep you motivated to go on to the next one right away!
